Facts on Insurance Coverage, Public Attitudes About Blindness

Did you know . .

An overwhelming majority of middle-aged and older Americans believe vision care and vision rehabilitation should be covered by health insurance plans.

In reality, among those with general health care insurance, a significant proportion do not have coverage for even basic eye care services. People with severe vision impairments are at a disadvantage in terms of basic health care coverage.

A large majority of middle-aged and older Americans fear blindness more than other physical impairments. Only mental and emotional illness is feared more.

The majority of middle-aged and older Americans have limited knowledge of the relationship between vision loss and aging. More than 13 million Americans age 45 or older experience some form of visual impairment; 53% describe it as severe.

The percentage of individuals with vision loss increases with age:

  • 15% of adults age 45-64
  • 17% of adults age 65-74
  • 26% of adults age 75+

Knowledge about the availability of local vision rehabilitation services is seriously lacking, creating a huge gap between the need for services and access to services.
