USING THE MS WORD
RIBBON
TERMS AND
DEFINITIONS:
RIBBON: the ribbon
takes the place of menus that were used in earlier versions of Microsoft Word
KEYS YOU WILL NEED TO
KNOW:
Windows Keys: TAB,
ARROWS
JAWS Keys: no new
jaws keys
EXPLANATION:
When you press the
alt key you access the ribbon toolbar. To navigate to a different ribbon you
use left and right arrows. To navigate the ribbon you are on use the tab and
shift tab keys. To leave the ribbon press the escape
key at any time. Normally there are 8 different ribbons in the ribbon toolbar. The names of the different ribbons are referred
to as tabs. When you first press the alt key, Jaws will say home tab because of
its shape, but it is the home ribbon. For example: press alt to go to the home
tab, to access the items in the home ribbon press tab and keep pressing tab to
hear all the items in the ribbon. Eventually you will come out of the ribbon and
hear home tab again. Leave the ribbon toolbar by pressing the escape key. Press
alt again to go to the ribbon toolbar and this time press the right arrow key. Keep
pressing the right arrow key and eventually you will get back to the home tab
again. If you are inside a ribbon and want to switch to a different ribbon you
need to press escape first and then go back to the ribbon toolbar with alt. There
are other items in the Office button submenu grid. The fastest way to access
that is to use alt f. When accessing the ribbons Jaws also says the hotkeys for
all the items and the different ribbons. Remember hotkeys give you direct
access to something, like control p for printing. For example when on the home
tab Jaws will say alt followed by h. The insert tab would be alt followed by n.
All items are labeled with like this but it would be hard to memorize all of
them for direct access. The old commands like control p and control e and
others still work in Word 2007.
