EXPLANATION:

The Internet is a huge network of computers.  The Internet and the World Wide Web or WWW are not the same thing.  If the address of a web page starts with http://www, then you are on the World Wide Web.  If it does not, then you are not on the World Wide Web, but you are on the Internet and the address will start with http:// but will not have www after that. An address is typed into the address bar. Alt + d brings focus to the address bar. A basic example of an address is http://www.slsbvi.org. The http: part refers to the protocols or rules used for the computers to communicate correctly. The www means that it’s part of the World Wide Web. The slsbvi.org is the domain name. SLSBVI indicates that the web page is stored on the slsvbi computer and .org is saying that this domain is an organization. Other domains could be .gov for government, .edu for education, .com, .biz and others. What comes after that will be folder or directory names as well as file names. An example would be http://www.slsbvi.org/about/programs.aspx. The about is the name of the folder and programs.aspx is the name of the file. The way any information is viewed on the Internet is through a browser.  There are different types of browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera and others.  A web page is what you see when using a browser.  A web page can have text, graphics, video, audio, forms and links. To return to the web page when Internet Explorer first opens, press alt home at any time.
