TERMS AND
DEFINITIONS:
ICON: a picture on
the computer desktop that represents files, folders and programs
DESKTOP: an area that
has icons that are listed in columns
MENU: a list of
options or commands that you can choose from
START BUTTON: a menu
that lists programs, files and folders
TASKBAR: displays a
list of the programs that you have opened
SYSTEM TRAY: displays
a list of programs that the computer has opened
NAVIGATE: describes
how you get around on a computer
COMMAND: using the
keyboard to perform an action (it’s how you tell the computer what to do)
KEYS YOU WILL NEED TO
KNOW:
Windows Keys: TAB,
ARROWS
JAWS Keys: insert
f11, insert f12
EXPLANATION:
When the Windows
Operating System is finished loading, you are presented with the "main
screen", which is made up of several groups: desktop, start button, task
bar and system tray. When on the
desktop, you can navigate to the other groups by using the tab key. When on a particular group, you navigate the
list in the group using the arrow keys. JAWS has its own commands to perform
actions. Pressing insert F11 creates a list of what is in the system tray that
you can navigate using arrow keys.
Pressing insert F12 reads the time and pressing insert F12 twice quickly
reads the date.
ACTIVITIES:
1) Tab to different areas of the screen, teacher
may need to access the desktop with alt tab
2) Navigate desktop using arrow keys
3) Navigate system tray using arrow keys
4) Verbally repeat some items JAWS reads
5) Perform command insert f11 for the system
tray and read the list with arrow keys
6) Perform command insert f12 to read time, and
insert f12 twice quickly for date
