TERMS AND DEFINITIONS:

SUB-MENU: a menu within a menu

LIST BOX: a box with a list

ACCELERATOR KEYS: a quick way of moving in a list by use of the underlined letter

COMBINATION KEYS: a way performing commands by using more than one key at a time

 

KEYS YOU WILL NEED TO KNOW:

Windows Keys:WINDOWS, ENTER, ESCAPE (ESC), ALT, TAB, F4

 

EXPLANATION:

When the start button is pressed, the start menu opens.  This is done by pressing the windows key.  The start menu has a list of items. For this reason, navigation of the start menu is accomplished using arrow keys. A sub-menu is opened using the right arrow key and is closed by using the escape (esc) key; using the esc key backs out of menus one at a time.  The start menu can be closed at any time by using the alt key.  When a program or file is located, it is opened by pressing enter.  Those items will be listed in the task bar. Task bar items can be viewed or read by pressing alt + tab. You can exit a program by pressing alt + f4. The desktop is accessed at any time by pressing alt + tab or windows key + m.

 

ACTIVITIES:

1)     Open the start menu using the windows key and arrow listening for

a)     Item names

b)     Underlined letter (or the accelerator key)

c)     Sub-menu

2)     Open start menu and navigate to programs with arrow key, right arrow to open accessories, arrow to calculator and back out of each menu with escape

3)     Do number 2 again and close all menus with alt key

4)     Open start menu and navigate to programs with arrow key, right arrow to open accessories, arrow to calculator and press enter

5)     Press alt tab till it says calculator and exit program with alt f4

6)     Open start menu and press p for programs, a for accessories if needed, c till you hear calculator and press enter

7)     Press alt tab if necessary till it say calculator and exit program with alt f4
