EXPLANATION:

A window is an enclosed rectangular area on the screen.  A window gives you a place to work with your program or application. Almost all programs have a title bar and menu bar. A screen reader can read the title in the title bar to you.  With JAWS this hotkey is insert + t. You can access the menu bar with the alt key.  This is a window’s command (it has nothing to do with the screen reader). You access the other menus in the menu bar with the left/right arrow keys.  You can leave the menu bar by pressing alt again.  When the screen reader says, edit, you are at a place you can type.

ACTIVITIES:

1)     Open Wordpad which is found in start/programs/accessories

2)     Open Internet Explorer which may be in the start menu when it is first opened

3)     Read the title of the current window with insert t

4)     Alt tab to Wordpad and listen for the word edit

5)     Access the menu bar with alt

6)     Use left and right arrows to access other menus in the menu bar

7)     Leave the menu bar with escape and listen for what the screen reader says

8)     Leave the menu bar with alt and listen for what the screen reader says
