EXPLANATION:

The screen reader will read where the current focus is: 2 examples are; start button is read when the focus is there or, file is read when the alt key is pressed because focus is brought there.  One of the menus is a system menu where you can choose to restore, minimize or maximize a window (there are a few other commands in that menu as well). It is a good idea to maximize windows.  Pressing alt + space + x is the shortcut key for doing so.  There are underlined letters in the menu names, which can be used to open those menus quicker.  An example is using alt + t to open the tools menu instead of alt, pressing right arrow several times and then using the down arrow to open. Some items in the menus have a dot dot dot … after the item. The dot dot dot … means a dialogue box follows. A dialogue box requests information from you.  Moving in a dialogue box is done mainly with the tab, shift + tab and arrow keys. You can close a dialogue box window if you do not wish to work with it.  We will look at these examples using 2 programs.  One is Wordpad, which is a word processor and Internet Explorer, which is a browser used to browse the Internet.

ACTIVITIES:

1)     Open Wordpad and press alt space and use arrows to listen to the different options

2)     Make sure Wordpad is maximized by using the command alt spacebar x

3)     Press alt then arrow right once then arrow down (listen for that underlined letter) – this process opens the edit menu

4)     Press alt e – this command opens the edit menu

5)     Open the file menu with alt f and listen for the … and the underlined letter, arrow through other items

6)     Open Internet Explorer and open the view menu

7)     Use the arrow keys to listen for submenu and the underlined letter

8)     Alt tab back to Wordpad and access the file menu and arrow to save as…

9)     Press enter on save as… and tab through the options of the dialogue box and listen to the directions given for each type of option
