TERMS AND
DEFINITIONS:
TREE VIEW: in Windows
Explorer, it is folders organized from top to bottom in which sub folders would
branch out like a tree to the right
LEVEL: the tree view
is organized into levels; the higher the level number the further down the tree
view you are. Level zero is at the top
FOLDER VIEW LIST
VIEW: in Windows Explorer, it is a list of folders or files in a column
CLOSED: a folder that
is closed; sub folders are hidden from view
OPEN: a folder that
is open; the sub folders are in view and listed down and slightly to the right,
under the open folder
EXPAND: another term
describing to open
COLLAPSE: another
term describing to close
HEADER BAR: a bar
with a column title, in which the contents that are under the bar can be
organized… we will not be reorganizing anything under header bars
SPLIT BUTTON: it consolidates
variations of a command… we will be avoiding the split button
ACTIVATE: to cause an
event to happen

COMMANDS
EXPLANATION: Windows
Explorer can be opened using the command windows key e. The program can also be
found in the accessories sub menu of the start menu. When Windows Explorer is
first opened the focus is on the folder view list view. Using tab the next area
is the header bar aligned in a row. You can arrow to the right and left. It is
used to organize the way the files are listed but we have no need to change the
organization. Tab again and you get to the split button. The most useful
command here would be to use the down arrow to access some folders but we will
have a different way to access folders. Tab again and you are in a search edit
field used for searching files and folders. Tab again and you come to a row of
buttons where you can use left and right arrows to listen to what is said.
We’ll tab again and we’ll come to more buttons where you can use up and down
arrows. Tab again and you come to something that can be collapsed or expanded.
Collapsing will hide items from view and expanding will put those items in view.
Tab again and you get to the tree view and tab again and you will be at the
folder view list view. At this point you
are back where you started when you first opened the program. The tree view is
very important and will be discussed in detail on the next lesson.
