How can I stay involved in leisure activities when I cannot see to do them?Choose activities that you can use with your other senses. Stay with activities that can be felt and/or heard. These activities may include listening to books on tape, music, a variety of crafts, cooking and horticulture activities. The possibilities are unlimited, depending on your interests. There are social groups that gather to share ideas and experiences and socialize. This support system offers friendship, guidance and an introspection into others' visual problems. St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers a bi-monthly recreation group, special events throughout the year and a variety of other leisure interests that are available through our organization. Small group classes have been offered in ceramics, picture framing, basket weaving and other crafts which individuals wish to try. We explore past interests, current interests, and potential future interests as well as how they can be adapted to your vision loss in a group setting and individually. Why is it important to maintain leisure interest after vision loss or blindness?Everyone needs leisure interest in their lives to maintain social contacts, reduce stress and remain challenged in their daily living. When there is a vision loss and/or blindness, it is especially important to be open to new ways of doing things and activities while making life more satisfying. The Leisure/Recreation Activities Group meets from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 am on Tuesdays. The recreation program encourges participants to:
